ABQ’s Top 8 for MUTYA NA PILIPINAS 2010!

Enjoyed a quiet night in my room at the Ayurduta Resort in Lippo Village, Indonesia going through the photos of the 24 beauty contestants in the Mutya ng Pilipinas 2010 pageant. Such pretty faces and gorgeous bodies… sigh… I just love the way God created woman to be so captivating :)

Anywhoo…  here are just some of my initial reactions – this year’s headshots and photos of the girls are much better than last year’s collection. So is the swimsuit design. The gladiator shoes are the in-thing of course but not all of them were flattering on the girls.

One thing lacking – the girls didn’t SIZZLE in the photos. I wanted something more crisp and firey like spicy chicken skin, LOLOL! Also I wasn’t entirely satisfied with the close-up shots. I’m not sure if it’s the lighting or if it was because most of the girls weren’t smiling in the close-ups but I’m betting on the latter – it takes a good amount of skill to look hot without a smile. Even I can’t do it!

Here are my initial picks (not yet final since I have yet to see the girls). I made my decisions based on the headshots and body shots of our delicious 24 Mutya ng Pilipinas 2010 beauty contestants:

Note*** Some of my comments are critical but they are meant to help improve and not put down anyone. My apologies if you feel otherwise…

Scroll down to the bottom to see the complete list of Mutya ng Pilipinas 2010 contestants…

1) BATANGAS – Suzette Hernandez

BATANGAS - Suzette Hernandez

I luuuurrrv her sharp nose and almond eyes! Nice little pout too. Suzette Hernandez is blessed because she can look good without a smile. But I still wish I had at least one photo of her smiling – it would give me a better idea of what she looks like.

I’m not that much into slouching but I really like her ‘sitaw’ shot at the bottom right. In it, Suzette Hernandez looks hungry but defiant. Like a 5’6″ vertical tiger.

Are you wondering what her dark tresses might look like without those hair bands? Hmmm…

Looking at her swimsuit shots, I’m suspicious that the vital stats Mutya ng Pilipinas gave me (31-25-35) are partially wrong because Suzette Hernandez’ waistline looks much tinier than 25 inches. I mean you can see those hollow spots below her ribs! They make me want to force a gallon of ice cream down her throat!

But wait, I’m just teasing, that lean waist and small ribcage make her a sculptor’s dream; but she needs to work those legs out, I don’t see enough muscle to make me happy.

BATANGAS - Suzette Hernandez

BICOL, Carla Lizardo

2) BICOL -Carla Lizardo

I like the chiseled look of Carla Lizardo’s face. I know ‘chiseled’ is a word usually attributed to men but I think I can use it in her case and NO, she doesn’t look like a guy at all! She is as feminine as a rose.

I like her chin and her lips and the curve under her cheekbones. Very simpatica this girl. But I think she needs to get a tan. Carla Lizardo looks whiter than her bikini. Those gladiator shoes also make her legs look a little heftier than they actually are – at least that’s what I think. Or maybe she just needs to take up jogging or some other sport that will thin her legs down a bit. But still, a pretty face and an attractive body!

Just like me, Carla Lizardo is thick waisted (34-27-34) but amazingly, it’s not obvious in the photos below.

BICOL, Carla Lizardo

CEBU - Karen Fatima Montanez

3) CEBU – Karen Fatima Montanez

Her swimsuit shots made me put her on my list. I am not too happy with her close-up; it doesn’t do her pretty face justice.

But, no matter, Karen Montanez still looks luscious as a peach. I think it’s the pouty lips and penetrating eyes that make this 5’6″ Cebuana stand out in a sea of faces.

Again, I feel hampered in my observations because none of these three photos show Karen Montanez smiling. It is funny because I always thought smiling was one of the Top 3 activities of a beauty contestant!

Anywhoo, I think this fair lady needs to spend more time in the gym; while her vital stats are wonderful at 35-25-36, she’d look even better if she had some muscle tone. But that’s just my personal taste – many people like women to have softer curves…

CEBU - Karen Fatima Montanez

EAST COAST USA - Christi Lynn Ashley McGarry

4) EAST COAST USA – Christi Lynn “Ashley” McGarry

Doesn’t she have the most engaging Filipina smile? Well, that smile was born and raised in America!

Christi Lynn “Ashley” McGarry is representing the East Coast of the United States and while she has an American last name she still looks 100% Pinay! But she’s a VERRRY tall Pinay at 5’11″. The tallest one in the Mutya ng Pilipinas 2010 batch of beauties.

For me, Ashley McGarry (pronounced muh-GAH-ree) is a strong contender for the Best in Swimsuit award: any fool can see she is genetically blessed with long and slinky anatomical lines. I can also see the healthy muscle tone of a girl who grew up in a very active or sporty environment. Her vital stats are 34-25-36.

I wouldn’t mind it if Ashely McGarry won the crown.

EAST COAST USA - Christi Lynn "Ashley" McGarry

LAPU LAPU CITY - Sharon Grace Angel

5) LAPU-LAPU CITY – Sharon Grace Angel

Sharon Grace Angel’s close-up here makes her look very interesting – I like the structure of her face and she still looks alluring sans smile. I like her super-Biblical name too; it sounds like she has three first names and no last name, LOLOL!

This girl is another tall one in this year’s Mutya ng Pilipinas. Sharon Grace Angel is 5’9” and has curves that are pleasing to the eye. I am wishing though to see more protein in her muscles and maybe just an itty bitty tan.

While her stats say she is 34-25-37, she seems slimmer in the photos below. I guess that’s the case when you are tall. My favorite shot of Sharon Grace Angel is the one where she is standing in the pool with a little smile on her face. Hoping to see one with all her pearly whites for the world to see :)

LAPU LAPU CITY - Sharon Grace Angel

6) MARILAO – Ronalyn Raymundo

MARILAO - Ronalyn Raymundo

In every Filipino beauty pageant there are at least one or two girls who have that ‘artista-hin’ look and Ronalyn Raymundo has exactly that! Even her name sounds like it belongs on a movie poster. I can already see her in a tele-novela or modeling teen clothing for Bench.

Now, if I had my own pageant I would creat the “Artista-hin” Award. Of course that is a horrifying name for any award so I would have to be more imaginative and call it something more dignifying.

Anyway, if you look at Ronalyn Raymundo’s bottom right photo, you’ll see that she’s got this adorable one-sided mini-smile – if you watch top Hollywood actors and actresses carefully (like Drew Barrymore and Katie Holmes) they have mastered the art of lop-sided smiling. It works well on cam, don’t ask me why, but it does!

So, while I think Ronalyn Raymundo is far more suited to auditioning for Star Circle, joining Mutya ng Pilipinas is still a smart career move specially since she is a tad tall for acting at 5’8″.  Hard to find a leading man in her case…

MARILAO - Ronalyn Raymundo

PANGASINAN - Barbie Salvador

7) PANGASINAN- Barbie Salvador

Barbie Salvador is my pick for the Mutya ng Pilipinas 2010 crown if she is as smart as she looks. So many beautiful girls have lost beauty titles because they fumble at the Q&A portion. IMHO, you don’t need to be a mega-brain to do well in that. All you need is good strategy, practice and the voice of truth to ace the Q&A.

As for her Barbie Salvador’s close-up, I am dissatisfied. Her eyes are not pantay – one is obviously smaller than the other. But in Barbie’s defense, everybody has one smaller eye and it becomes more obvious when one is trying to look fierce. The solution is to change the angle of the subject or to choose another photo, LOLOL!

Hoping that my observations do not offend – they are meant to help improve. :)

I really like Barbie Salvador’s shot at the bottom right – just like her namesake, this 5’6.5” doll is voluptuous in the right places. But I think she can afford to lift a few weights and drop a few pounds. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t be surprised if she took the Best in Swimsuit award.

Wouldn’t you just like to pinch that wonderfully tanned thigh?

PANGASINAN - Barbie Salvador

*****************************************************

SUBIC BAY - Kim de Guzman

8 ) SUBIC  – Kim de Guzman

Is this the same Kim de Guzman who joined the Bikini Pageant of Slimmer’s World in 2009? If she is, then the photos here don’t show her full beauty. Click here and scroll down to see the photos of a smiling Kim de Guzman during the Slimmer’s World pageant which I covered. She’s got sweet sweet dimples that you just have to see!

Not smiling also adds years to Kim de Guzman’s youthful face. Okay, I’m really complaining big-time now so I’ll stop and try to say something good. In the two shots below, Kim, who carries a trim 32-24-32 figure, reminds me of one of my favorite fashion models/beauty queens – Marina Benipayo.

If this is indeed the same Kim then this girl is an experienced pageant competitor and winner. She did really well in Slimmer’s World Miss Bikini Philippines – she won Miss Great Skin, Best in Long Gown, and one of the major titles – Miss Bikini Philippines WORLD!

This sweetheart, who stands 5’5” tall is another contender for my “Artista-hin” Award!

Yvethe Santiago in winning National Costume, an Abaca creation by Aga Rinon

Now that it’s the start of the BER months, it’s a great time to look back at the hectic month of August and thank God for blessing the Philippines with FOUR Bicolana Beauty Queens who gained honor for the nation.

The very first beauty queen is the youngest in the batch – Yvette Santiago competed in the World Miss University 2010 beauty pageant for college students last August 8, 2010 in Korea. She competed against 58 other girls from different nations and won the BEST IN NATIONAL COSTUME for the beautfiul abaca outfit you see here which was designed by Aga Rinon. Mrs Universe 2010 Intellegence Award Winner - Maria Muriel "Lala" Moral

Our second beauty queen is the oldest but not the least prettiest – Maria Muriel “Lala” Moral represented the Philippines in the MRS Universe in Vilnius, Lithuania last August 21 and collected the Mrs Intelligence Award for her superb presentation of the Human Trafficking situation in the Philippines. Click here to find out more about what it’s like to compete MRS Universe!

Carla Lizardo Mutya ng Pilipinas Intercontinental 2010

The third beauty queen on the list is one of the top winners in the Mutya ng Pilipinas 2010 – Carla Lizardo. She competed against 23 other Filipinas from across the country and won the Best in Gown award aside from Mutya ng Pilipinas Intercontitnental. That title gives her the right to represent the Philippines in the coming Miss Intercontinental 2010 beauty pageant. Stand by for my exclusive interview with Carla Lizardo coming later this week. Click here to see Carla Lizardo and the rest of the Mutya ng Pilipinas 2010 winners.

And our fourth beauty queen star for August 2010 – Maria Venus Raj!!! She hauled in one of the most prestigious beauty pageant awards for the Philippines after her major major performance at the Miss Universe 2010 beauty pageant in Las Vegas on August 23, 2010. Her controversial answer gained her popularity in the international media. And whether you loved or hated her answer, bottom line is this – Venus Raj bested 78 other beauty queens to place fifth over-all.

Congratulations to all our Bicolana beauty queens who make us proud to be PINAY!!!

L-R - Chat Lizardo (Carla's Mom), Joyce Titular (that's me) and Carla Lizardo Mutya ng Pilipinas Intercontinental 2010

I was leaving the Mutya ng Pilipinas 2010 beauty pageant secretly gloating over the fact that I was able to predict the Top 5 winners when I bumped into a lovely lady in red who proffered a bright smile and said, “Joyce, is that you?”

It turned out to be Chat Lizardo, the Mom of the Mutya ng Intercontinental winner Carla Lizardo!  Boy, was I glad that I included Carla in my shortlist of favorites – Chat admitted she saw the post, WHEW!!!

Anyway, Chat and I go a long way back; we modeled together in our skinny years under fashion designer Elsie Astete. One of the gala shows we did together was “Katcha in Motion” (translation: Cheesecloth in Motion, hehehe) at the Philippine Plaza. If I am not mistaken, Cory was the president in those days. LOLOL!

But this story is NOT about Chat and me. This is about her gorgeous daughter Carla Lizardo and how she won the Mutya ng Pilipinas Intercontinental 2010 title.

Carla Lizardo's portrait by Mitch Bautista

CARLA’S STORY…

There were really no plans for Carla to join this year. Her main focus was her education – she was (and still is) a 3rd year Communications student in Ateneo de Manila, an almost dean’s lister AND, dig this, Team Captain of the Ateneo Girls Badminton Team! If she joined (and she was seriously thinking about it) Carla would have to do it after graduation next year.

Carla Lizardo’s portrait by Mitch Bautista

While Carla Lizardo had always wanted to be a fashion model, she wasn’t getting any gigs except for the occasional X-deal project. She tried going to several VTR auditions but was considered chubby and as most of us know, chubby doesn’t make the cut.

So when Carla Lizardo qualified for Mutya ng Pilipinas 2010 she had to go on a major, MAJOR bikini diet. But I’m jumping ahead of myself…

WHAT WOULD WE DO WITHOUT DEVIOUS FRIENDS?

The story starts here – 1. A family friend of the Lizardos submits Carla’s photos to Mutya ng Pilipinas without her knowledge. 2. Carla Lizardo gets approved; her presence is requested at a screening. 3. Family Friend informs Carla Lizardo of his Devious Deed. 4. Family Friend proceeds to convince her to go to screening.  5. Carla eventually attends screening; is selected to be one of the final contestants.

6. Conflict rears its ugly head!

THE CHOICE: MUTYA OR UAAP?

Carla Lizardo in badminton action!

The Mutya ng Pilipinas 2010 beauty pageant was to be held in August. A baaaaad month for Carla Lizardo – her team was going to compete in the UAAP Badminton Tournament that month and no way would she ditch that competition and her girls. So Carla informed the Mutya ng Pilipinas committee that she was backing out with the intention of joining next year.

Photo from Boss Rico’s blog!

But they wouldn’t let Carla Lizardo off the hook. Another round of forceful convincing ensued and finally, she decided to compete in both the Mutya ng Pilipinas AND the UAAP badminton tournament!

It was at this point that Carla went on a diet to get bikini-perfect for the pageant. Apparently, chasing shuttlecocks with a graphite racket everyday is not enough to trim down this sexy Bicolana beauty. With Mom’s advice, she went on the South Beach Diet and that, combined with the stress of her freaky schedule, helped her lose 10lbs. So, from a healthy 138lbs, she went down to a slinkier 128. But as you can see, Carla Lizardo did not lose the curves.

Carla Lizardo in the official Mutya ng Pilipinas swimwear...

UNEXPECTED VICTORY!

Throughout the whole Mutya exercise, Carla Lizardo did not expect to win the Mutya ng Pilipinas Intercontinental 2010 title. And I don’t think she was just being cute or ‘humble’ about it. She was honestly surprised she made it into the Top 5 (she also won Best in Gown) because she was always under the impression that you had to join two or three times before you made it to the circle of winners.

Carla Lizardo in a Frederick Peralta creation. Carla went on to win Best in Gown at the Mutya ng Pilipinas 2010!

Sure, the join-and-join-before-you-win strategy works for some girls – like our very own Venus Raj who tasted defeat once or twice before making it as Bb. Pilipinas 2010 and eventually as Miss Universe 2010 4th Runner-up – but it isn’t as sure as gravity. Many beauty contestants are like Carla – they come out of nowhere and land a major title.

Another person who couldn’t believe it was Carla’s Dad Joe Lizardo. He was on tenterhooks on the day of the pageant and refused to watch Carla do battle on stage. He opted to sit outside the Resorts World theater, in a restaurant with some buddies. Even if he knew his daughter was a winner, he didn’t think his blood pressure could take it if she lost.

Carla’s Mom on the other hand is made of sterner stuff. Chat Lizardo was  in the heart of the crowd. But she was feeling like an ice cube from head to toe, not knowing what to think or how to feel. All she knew was that she had to be there to cheer her daughter on.  It was only when Carla’s name was called into the Top 5 that she was able to regain a warmer body temperature and text her husband to come in and watch thier baby win.

It was one proud and exhilirating moment for Chat and Joe Lizardo to witness thier little girl, all big and beautiful now, being crowned a beauty queen before a crowd of thousands!

Carla Lizardo is crowned Mutya ng Pilipinas 2010 Intercontinental!

YOUR PURPOSE WILL FIND YOU!

Although Carla Lizardo’s quest in Mutya began with a lot of reluctance, she says deciding to go for it against the odds was one of the best things she’s done. She adds that the journey to the crown only reaffirmed her belief that if you are meant to do something, it will find you!  And now that her dream of becoming a famous model has found her, she’s hoping the Mutya ng Pilipinas Intercontinental 2010 beauty title will open doors to the world of TV hosting as well – she is a Communications student after all.

But Carla, hold your horses! Next stop for you is the Miss Intercontinental 2010! What can I say except that we’re all looking forward to THAT crown finding your beautiful head. :)

Carla Lizardo or Ashley McGarry? Who Is Competing in Miss Intercontinental?

Carla Lizardo, Mutya ng Pilipinas Intercontinental 2010

ABQ  just recieved news that the 99-year-old grandfather of Mutya ng Pilipinas Intercontinental 2010 Carla Lizardo passed on yesterday after being trapped in a terrible fire that razed his home. Carla’s grandmother made it safely out of the burning house.

Carla’s Mom informed me that they will no longer pursue the Miss Intercontinental beauty pageant as the whole family is still dealing with the shock of it all.

I guess this means Ashley McGarry will be taking her place – her name and photo are listed in the official website of Miss Intercontinental.

I just have a question – Ashley McGarry was listed down as the official Philippine representative on the Miss Intercontinental website way before the Lizardo tragedy happened. But Ashley is the Asia Pacific winner. Did the pageant organizers really intend to send her to Intercontinental and not Carla? I tried texting someone from Mutya regarding this a few days ago but got no response.

Ashley McGarry's photo on the Miss Intercontinental 2010 website

Anyway, it seems fate has stepped in and closed a door for Carla Lizardo. But there is a window of hope – we might still see her next year in Miss Earth or Bb. Pilipinas. We’ll just have to wait and see…

In the meantime, the best of luck to Ashley McGarry, may you carry the Philippine sash well in the Miss Intercontinental in Dominican Republic. I know you will represent us well!

And to Carla Lizardo and her Mom Chat, I am so very sorry for your loss. My heartfelt condolences to you both and to your entire family. My prayers remain with you.

The wake is being held at the Holy Trinity Memorial Chapel in Paranaque.

The heat is building up at the Miss World Philippines camp as the search for candidates this 2012 enters its final week.

ABQ had the privilege of being on the screening committee of the MOA leg. The committe included Miss World Philippines franchise holder Cory, Quirino, beauty pageant analyst Lex Librea, 1st Princess MWP 2011 Nikette Henson, 4th Princess MWP 2011 Jaysel Arrozal and 3rd Princess MWP 2011 Bianca Paz.

I saw many familiar faces among the 29 girls who tried out -

Queenie (Queenierich) Rehman who won Best in Swimsuit in Bb Pilipinas 2011

Carla Lizardo who won Mutya ng Pilipinas Intercontinental 2011 2010

Ross Misa who was a contestant and Semi-finalist in Bb Pilipinas 2010…

And…

Two girls who recently won in the Miss Lions Clubs International 2012 pageant which I emceed a week ago – Larah Lacap who won the Lions World title and Rufaida Babudin, the Lions Mutya winner.

The Final Screening will take place on June 5 (tentatively at Broadway Centrum) when the official list of candidates for Miss World Philippines 2012 will be determined and announced!

According to Cory Quirino, 25 girls will be chosen on June 5. Coronation Night will be June 24, 2012, at Manila Hotel’s Tent.

Best wishes to Cory Quirino, Miss World Philippines and all the ladies who will be at the final screening!

Some of the lovely girls at the Miss World Philippines 2012 try-outs in SM MOA.. Miss Cory Quirino is in the pretty red dress near the middle…

Backstage with Bianca Paz (2011 MWP 3rd Princess) and Nikette Henson (2011 MWP 1st Princess) – Bianca Paz just signed on to be a TV host for a live show that begins in July and Nikette Henson is busy with her Wedding Planner business!

With Lex Librea! One of the screening Judges! Lex is a pageant pro who works in Travel Industry and recently lost over 60 lbs! We are partners in inspiring each other to get fit :)

With the pretty Jaysel Arrozal, 2011 MWP 4th Princess… she’s busy building her career in Marketing!

Carla Jenina Lizardo at the Final Screeining of Miss World Philippines 2012

CARLA JENINA LIZARDO’S WINNING ASSET: She’s a National-Level Title Holder

This Atenean Volleyball athlete won the Mutya ng Pilipinas Intercontinental in the year 2010 and with her foray into the Miss World Philippines beauty contest, Carla Lizardo gives much challenge to the other contestants because IMHO she’s got the complete package: beauty, brains and body!

Thanks to OPMB for the photo of Carla in silver.

Speaking of BODY, I noticed that Carla Jenina Lizardo has lost considerable weight since she won in Mutya. In 2010 she was a bit heavy but you can see below in a PDI photo that her abs are popping out! Ang ganda!

Her Mom Chat and I go back a long way, BTW; we both modeled together like a million years ago when animal skins were the trend, LOL! Mommy Chat always comes along with Carla and is the wind beneath her daughter’s wings. I love Mom and Daughter tandems – they are awesome!

Click here to read the article I wrote for Carla Lizardo after she had won the Mutya ng Pilipinas Intercontinental 2010 title. And here is her Twitter Account : @carlajenina if you want to follow her. She describes herself as: Beauty Queen-Athlete-Student who loves life, books and good food!

Question: Since Carla Lizardo looks like a China doll, do you think that would be a SUPER ASSET if she wins MWP 2012? This year’s Miss World will be held in Inner Mongolia, China – do you think that sending a Chinese-looking beauty would give us a better chance of winning?

Taken from Carla Jenina Lizardo’s Facebook. But now she’s back in the pageant thanks to some strange developments…

In an odd twist of fate, Carla Jenina Lizardo, who thought her Bb. dreams were dashed when she didn’t enter the Top 40, finds herself back in the game!

According to a reliable source who asked to remain anonymous, Carla Lizardo received a call last night from BPCI inviting her to come back and compete in the Bb. Pilipinas 2014 beauty pageant after the franchise reportedly disqualified two contestants. The Ateneo de Manila beauty accepted and will soon be announced an official candidate.

While I feel bad for the two girls rumored to have been axed – Sherlien Dass and Dianne Querrer, I am pleased that Carla Lizardo was recalled. IMHO, she should have been included in the Top 40 from the very start.

How could they have missed this divine beauty?

How could they have missed this divine beauty? Carla Lizardo is a stunner and deserves to be in the Top 40!

In fact, I could not believe it when I first scanned the list of official candidates and did not see Carla Lizardo’s name! First of all, she is already a proven winner as Mutya ng Pilipinas Intercontinental 2010 and a Top 12 finisher at Miss World Philippines 2012. Carla Lizardo also happens to be a news anchor for PTV 4 – beauty and brains! As a former volleyball varsity player, you can be assured that she’s got a great physique.

As for the second girl rumored to be recalled to the pageant: the grapevine says it’s none other than Aiza Faeldonia but I can’t verify that story.

Now, you don’t have to take my word that Carla’s back in the fray since Bb. Pilipinas has yet to issue an announcement and heaven knows ANYTHING can happen at this point. But I stand on the reliability of my source and will wait in expectation for the announcement of Carla’s recall from BPCI.

Can Recalled Contestants Carla Lizardo and Aiza Faeldonia Still Win in Bb. Pilipinas 2014?

Carla Jenina Lizardo (left) and Aiza Faeldonia are called back to compete in Bb. Pilipinas 2014!

Carla Jenina Lizardo (left) and Aiza Faeldonia are called back to compete in Bb. Pilipinas 2014!

I truly wonder how these two ladies feel after this emotional roller-coaster ride.

At first, it seemed that Carla Lizardo and Aiza Faeldonia were destined to be included in the Top 40, passing every screening session until the final day when they were told to go home. They didn’t make it! Imagine their disappointment after getting so far then being left out.

But then a strange thing came about: 2 girls in the official list of candidates were suddenly out of the running just two days after the announcement of the Top 40!

Carla and Aiza were then invited to join the final line-up of contestants in the Bb. Pilipinas 2014! Did they cry when they got the phone call? Or were they tempted to say no? Whatever they felt, it must have been positive because both girls grabbed the opportunity to be included in the final line-up.

And based on the photos above, both girls look more than qualified!

Diane Querrer (left) and She Dass - disqualified because of their height? Please say it isn't so!

Diane Querrer (left) and She Dass – disqualified because of their height? Please say it isn’t so!

Meantime, the two other girls – Sherlien Dass and Diane Querrer – who had to drop out of the pageant were reportedly disqualified due to height issues.  No, I do not envy these ladies who did their best to shine in the screenings. It’s no fault of theirs if they made the cut. Now, whether height (both are believed to 5’4″) was the reason for their disqualification has not been verified; Bb. Pilipinas has yet to make a formal announcement on the matter. The only proof of the change in line-up is the addition of the photos of Carla Lizardo and Aiza Faeldonia and the removal of the photos of She Dass and Diane Querrer on the official Facebook page of Bb. Pilipinas.

But now my question is: Do contestants who are ‘replacements’ have any real chance at any of the 4 crowns? At the very least can they enter the semi-finals? Will the judges and organizers ‘discriminate’ against them because they are just ‘recall’ girls? How well have previous ‘recall girls’ performed in Bb. Pilipinas?

As for this author, if either wins a crown, I will rejoice because such vindication is so sweet. And from what I’m seeing, these two girls could pull a shocker on coronation night, March 30, 2014. Wouldn’t that just be so fun?

Contestants 26 to 30: Bb. Pilipinas 2014 Press Presentation

Bb. Pilipinas finally presented to the press it’s 40 Official contestants in this year’s beauty tilt. The event was held on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, at the grand ballroom in Sofitel Hotel, formerly the Philippine Plaza. And from what this blogger witnessed, we’ve got another strong batch of contestants and more worthy beauties than crowns to give away.

Here are my thoughts on contestants 26 to 30. The names highlighted in RED are my top favorites. Those in GREEN I find intriguing.

Bb. Pilpinas 2014 Contestants 26 to 30

Bb. Pilpinas 2014 Contestants 26 to 30

Bb. #26 Hanna Sheena I. Manuel

Bb. #26 Hanna Sheena I. Manuel – 22 yo – Tuguegarao

Contestant #26 Hanna Sheena Manuel comes to the Bb. Pilipinas 2014 beauty pageant armed with a title: Bb. Cagayan Turismo 2013. This financial management student has an interesting look, on the ‘artistahin‘ side. I liked her styling during the Presscon but when they poof her hair up it makes her look odd – like a young girl with old lady hair. I prefer her hair to be flatter on the crown with body as the tresses tumble down her shoulders, She’s got a really pretty face with lots of feminine appeal, the youthful kind, so please keep her away from anything that’ll make her look older. Other than that, I think Sheena is a wild thang!

Bb. #27 Hannah Ruth Sison

Bb. #27 Hannah Ruth Sison – 25 yo – Makati

What a relief it was to see contestant #27 Hannah Ruth Sison on stage at the Presscon. For awhile, we were all worried that she was going to have to back out due to her current endorsement with Globe Telecom. The problem is this: Araneta Coliseum (the home venue of Bb. Pilipinas) is allied with Smart so closely that the Coliseum has been renamed the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Smart is of course the #1 competitor of Globe.

But I am SOOOO thankful that all companies involved have pushed aside their rights in view of the greater good because Hannah Ruth Sison might just be one of our next queens with the way she is performing in the pageant.

This is actually her 2nd time to join (she was contestant #19 last year) and I really believe that the reason she didn’t do well (she didn’t place at all) was because the multimedia teacher was overshadowed and out-maneuvered by Bea Rose Santiago. They could pass for sisters but Bea had far more experience and could work the stage much better. To make matters worse, they were assigned consecutive numbers so Hannah Ruth Sison was stuck in the shadow of a winner.

But 2014 might be Hannah’s year to outshine others. We could see her vindicated. I can see the International crown on her head, as worthy successor to Bea Rose who won the title last year and went on to win on the international level in Japan. Of course this is just how I feel. Lets see if I match the judges final verdict come March 30, coronation night!

Bb. #28 Carla Jenina Cabrera Lizardo

Bb. #28 Carla Jenina Cabrera Lizardo – 24 yo – Pasig

It was really good to see contestant #28 Carla Lizardo on stage after that big scare. What scare you say? Well, she did not make the cut as an official Top 40 contestant but then two days later Bb. Pilipinas called her up asking her to come back because two contestants had to step down, reportedly due to height issues. It must have been a jaw-dropping surprise for this former varsity badminton player to be called back!

Now that Carla Lizardo back in the game, let’s look at her strengths – Carla has solid pageant experience winning Mutya ng Pilipinas Intercontinental in 2010 and placing in the Top 12 of Miss World Philippines 2012. She’s got a great body paired with fabulously silky skin. And she’s no airhead; Carla’s a journalist and anchor for PTV4.

My only beef is this – her stylist has to stop putting her hair up in a bun. They also need to lessen her eye make-up because it takes away from her natural beauty. IMHO, a softer look with hair falling in swirling dark clouds would be the ideal look for this hottie!

Bb . #29 Krischelle DG Halili

Bb . #29 Krischelle DG Halili – 23 yo – Tarlac

Hm. She makes me think of Athena Imperial, our Miss Philippines Earth 2011. Or sometimes actress Eula Valdez. Either way, contestant #29 is Krischelle DG Halili has a striking face like her two look-a-likes. Oh, I just have to say that the DG in her name is intriguing. Does anyone know what it stands for?

Anyway, KC (as she is fondly called) is a UST beauty taking up medicine after finishing a degree in nursing. She has a budding gift for writing, see for yourself on her Tumblr Blog. But I wish she’d find time to write more stuff. Her most charming feature are her expansive eyes that glow like dark scarabs in the night.

Bb. #30 Joy Marie Gangan

Bb. #30 Joy Marie Gangan

Built like a doll, contestant #30 Joy Marie Gangan is one of the most competitive girls in this year’s batch. She’s tall, stunning, shapely and knows how to work a stage to her advantage. She’s also an experienced pageant winner having represented the Philippines in the Best Model of the World 2012 which was held in Turkey. Joy Gangan went home with the Top Model special award.

Another advantage: this lithe lass is only 19 years old. She has years of productiveness ahead of her! If she doesn’t grab a crown this year, there’ll be time for winning in the future. But at the same time, she shouldn’t be an overconfident hare because there’s no better time to win than now.

On more thing. This stunner from Isabela grew up plain and simple as a farmer girl in the province. Her rags to beauty story is a powerful pageant asset but Joy Gangan needs to learn how to be more loquacious like her kababayan Mutya Datul. She doesn’t have to learn perfect English; all she needs is to learn how to express her heart and mind as sincerely as possible. I can see Joy taking over the Bb. Supranational title from Mutya, they seem to come from the same mold. But she has to overcome her shyness and start roaring like the lioness that she is.

Thoughts on the Bb Pilipinas 2014 National Costumes – Contestants #26 to #30

I was so very happy to hear that this year’s Bb. Pilipinas Fashion Show at the Araneta Coliseum (March 6, 2014) was going to incorporate the National Costume competition. What a great idea from Team Binibini! I was eager to see the girls parade in Filipiniana of all kinds and dying to see the designs. This is not just about the girls, but about the beauty and significance of their costumes.

My major irritation though is that they failed to mention the designers of these beautiful creations! What would it have cost to include their names somehow during the program? Even to flash the designer’s names on screen would have been enough. What an oversight, in my humble opinion!

Nevertheless, I loved almost all the gowns and costumes and appreciated each one. In this series of blog posts, I’ll go through each costume and share my thoughts… those highlighted in RED are the gowns and girls that impressed me!

26. Hanna Sheena Manuel

26. Hanna Sheena Manuel

In this particular photo, Hanna Sheena Manuel reminded me of former Pitoy Moreno model Crispy Santamaria who was one of Imelda Marcoses’ favorite models. The girl from Tuguegarao  walked daintily, almost shyly, in an emerald Terno looking every inch a Filipina Mestiza. Beautifully simple!

27. Hanna Ruth Sison

27. Hannah Ruth Sison

One of my favorite costumes for the evening was a barong-like dress done in early 1900s style displayed by the effervescent Hannah Ruth Sison. All she needed was a flouncy hat to complete the 1900′s look but… Pinoys are not into dressy hats so never mind, aahaha! Anyway, I really like this pastor’s kid and fear that she is not getting enough attention from the press and pageant fans. So I do hope to God that the judges see what I see in her…

*****

28. Carla Jenina Lizardo

28. Carla Jenina Lizardo

A partly-beaded Terno, white as snow, with a matching abanico – good choice for the porcelain beauty of Carla Jenina Lizardo. The PTV 4 anchor looked like an ice princess, yet the coldness of her costume ended where her warm smile began. And I must add that I loved the serpentina tail of her gown for it’s cut and opacity…

*****

29. Krischelle Halili

29. Krischelle Halili

Could the legendary Sarimanok be the inspiration for this multi-colored gown? That’s what I was thinking when Krischelle Halili took her turn on stage. Loved the hues on the dress and the way it would lead my eye up and down the figure of this wrestling fan. The flurry of what looked like faux feathers on her skirt was also a nice touch.

*****

30. Joy Gangan

30. Joy Gangan

The leggy Joy Marie Gangan, who grew up on an Isabella farm, came out in tribal-wear with a thick train of dark feathers that caressed the stage as she strode down the catwalk. It would have been fun if she were carrying a spear – somehow, the outfit reminded me of hunting. One thing though I noticed is that this pretty face sticks to one kind of smile. Hoping to see a bigger range of emotion on Joy who is a favorite of mine…

An Honest Critique on My Favorite Web Interviews in Bb. Pilipinas 2014

My favorite web interviews in Bb. Pilipinas 2014!

My favorite web interviews in Bb. Pilipinas 2014!

Sorry, I got into the web interviews only now even if they have been available online for a couple weeks or more. But I really prefer to look at the girls first before seeing how they speak since Bb. Pilipinas is first and foremost a beauty pageant. To my mind that means physical beauty and physique will always come first with intelligence and communication skills as the runners-up, if you get what I mean.

My Top 10 favorite web interviews (those highlighted in RED are my super-duper-favorites):

#4 Parul Shah

Funny Parul with your O.A. facial expressions during the play-acting part! You best asset IMHO is that wide beauty queen smile which is the hallmark of many Miss U winners. Just be careful girl because your eyes got shifty once at the start of the interview. It’s okay to look away from the camera but just not in a shifty way. You were so relaxed when you were play-acting but you started the interview a little cool. I love your warm, flirty side so flaunt that from the very start of all your interviews. I also didn’t quite like your hair in the vid. I much prefer the glossy tumble of curls that you sometimes sport… but based on what I’ve seen so far, I think you can win a crown if you play your cards right!

#8 Pia Wurtzbach

Pia, you still seem serious. Angelic, for sure, but still serious. And when you get serious, you frown a little. Just a little, but still, a frown is a frown and you want to avoid facial lines on your forehead during interviews. So I think you should smile more while talking because you tend to speak with a serious expression and only break into a smile every now and then or at the end of a sentence. Maybe you should avoid talking about how serious you can be?  And then focus on bringing out the bubbly Pia whom I have met and seen in previous Bb. events. There’s a big chance of you winning a crown so bring on the sunshine sweetheart!

#9 Joy Antonette Diaz

Truly, you made me laugh with your funny puns and hilarious attempt to sell a mustache pen! I wanted to buy one by the end of your video. I thought you were so well put together and had one of the best interviews. But is there a way to soften your twang? Maybe modulate your voice a little, lower it a bit or something? I think it’ll be worth the effort to learn how to have softer (but still strong) speaking voice. But overall, your web interview was quite impressive!

#13 Kris Janson

Love you so much Kris, you’ve got a winning face, a warm personality and a smart way of speaking. I have my ‘eye’ on you for one of the crowns! But just be careful with your subject-verb agreement. I know grammar is not that important in pageants; the main thing is to be able to express yourself well and make sense, right? But if you can improve in any way, then go for it. Just so you know, your eye trick freaked me out (in a good way) and I loved that little thing about airports you mentioned in your intro! Great web interview!

#18 Ellore Punzalan

You have been consistently delivering in Bb. Pilipinas 2014, Ellore! Choosing to speak mostly in Pilipino (and speaking it intelligently) during the web interview was a nice touch and your tula was SO ADORABLE! Para akong nanonood ng Batibot, ahaha! And, when you shifted to English at the end of your video, you still sounded awesome. In fact I wanted you to continue talking! Keep up the good work…

#22 Bianca Guidotti

I like your naturalness Bianca, and your feminine sweetness. You had GREAT answers without sounding ‘pa-cute’. Your fashionista jacket and casually tousled hair added to your lovely picture. Just watch out because sometimes you frown when you’re speaking. Oh, and thank you for speaking in Portuguese! That skill is truly one of the biggest arguments for you to be put on the throne and sent to Portuguese-speaking Brazil for the Miss Universe 2014. Of course that’s aside from your lovely face (a make-up artist for ABS-CBN who did your make-up once, told me you were so gorgeous) and whip-like body which electrified me during the press presentation!

#25 MJ Lastimosa

Ah. A face that is worth a crown. MJ, you’re just really lovely but allow me to give some pointers. To be honest, you sounded like you were giving a monologue. I know what you said came from the heart, you just delivered it in a way that sounded too practiced. These might sound like tough words but better are the wounds of a friend than the kind words of an enemy, right? Next comment – your answer was a little too long and you were dangerously close to rambling. Avoid that. The trick is to stop talking at the point where they want to hear more from you. And lastly, just a minor thing, work on your articles and count/non-count nouns for better grammar. On the positive side, your gestures were wonderful and your wide smile and varied expressions while speaking gave much sparkle to your beauty. You had GREAT content, a wonderful message and looked absolutely ravishing!

#27 Hannah Ruth Sison

My dear Hannah, you really should enter theater. Your face is extremely expressive and was very engaging in the web interview! Oh, you also reminded me a bit of sex kitten Vivian Velez, one of my favorite Pinay beauties. You laughed a little and I thought that so cute and natural. During the singing part, you looked like a vamp. My advice is to be consistent because in the web interview, you started out flat but when it got to the question part and the final invitation to the pageant, you were so much fun. Dapat, from the start pa lang of all interviews, ganun ka na! And your styling here was fabulous – curls at the bottom of your hair and you in that little black bustier… niiiice! Can you be like this ALL the time?

#28 Carla Lizardo

You gave a very intelligent web interview, Carla, I liked it much. You speak confidently and smoothly, a reflection of how much you’ve grown since you began working as a journalist/anchor for PTV4. Dinig na dinig ang professionalism at sincerity mo. Now is there a way we can get you to flirt a little more? Not in a bastos way ha, but in a charming and engaging way…

#35 Yvethe Santiago

I think out of all the girls, you are the one to beat when it comes to flirting with the camera! You have it down pat. But don’t let that get to your head. I noticed that in your web interview you referred to yourself in the third person. Be careful because the judges might think you’re narcissistic. Please read more about people who refer to themselves in the third person here.  I don’t wish to offend but I am a firm believer in criticism that is meant to help people improve. Besides, I do hope to see you win a crown, Yvethe. I’ve followed your career since you joined that pageant in Korea a few years back and I see you have grown into a fierce/fab pageant competitor. I have heard rumors too that many of the front-runners in the pageant are afraid of you… but again, don’t let that get to your head. And since it seems that you are close to a crown, remember this: The best time to learn humility is before a victory!

ABQ’s Top 15 Binibinis for 2014 !!!

$

Choosing my Top 15 in this year’s Bb. Pilipinas 2014 was a painful chore not unlike waxing my legs or visiting the dentist. But only because I had a hard time choosing from among this year’s collection of 40 gorgeous gals! It seems like our nation’s success in winning beauty titles the past few years is attracting the most stunning and accomplished young Filipinas to the world of competitive pageants.

Note that I did not directly forecast anything for the Tourism title because I have deep misgivings about it and feel that its an empty title. Since I have much to say about this, I’ll save it for a different post. Meantime….

…on to my fearless forecast of 15 Top Binbinis for 2014!!!

READ THIS STORY ON YAHOO PHILIPPINES!

MY TOP 5:

My Top 5 Girls - clockwise from upper left - Kris Tiffany Janson, Pia Wurtzbach, Parul Shah, Hannah Ruth Sison and Yvethe Santiago

My Top 5 Girls – clockwise from upper left – Kris Tiffany Janson, Pia Wurtzbach, Parul Shah, Hannah Ruth Sison and Yvethe Santiago

1) Parul Shah for Miss Universe Philippines.

Several reasons why I think Parul is perfect for the Universe Philippines title – she’s got that wide crescent moon smile that is the hallmark of many MU winners. This Fil-Indian charmer has a sexy, tight body and flat, muscular abs – the build Miss Universe tends to favor. This is the 2nd time for Parul to join Bb. Pilipinas after making it to the semi-finals last year.

2) Kris Tiffany Janson for any crown.

A universal beauty, Kris Tiffany Janson will do well in any international pageant. This Cebuana has that signature doll-look that pageant fanatics adore, she is very articulate, a real charmer and has a bikini-worthy body. I’ve heard many pageant critics say that out of all the girls in this batch only Kris Tiffany Janson is sure to win a crown.

3) Yvethe Santiago for any crown

Yvethe is another beauty who can do the nation proud in any of the international tilts. She is a mannequin and a beauty queen rolled into one fabulous body. She combines fierceness with sweetness. Zing!

Yvethe is such a rising star and is the favorite of many pageant fans. But there are some who feel she is still too young. One observer suggested that the Bicolana should place as a runner-up to give her one year of training before joining again just like Janine Tugonon did a few years back. But we’re not the judges to make that decision. Let’s see what happens on coronation night March 30!

4) Pia Wurtzbach for International or Universe

This is Pia’s second time in Bb. Pilipinas (she was the lone runner-up last year) and we all know that the former actress is gunning for the Universe title. But I think she’ll also be good for Bb Pilipinas International. Her winning assets are her striking beauty, generous curves in the right places, great communication skills and fierce catwalk.

5) Hannah Ruth Sison for International or Intercontinental

I think this Bb. Pilipinas 2nd-timer is one of the most underrated beauties in this year’s batch. Maybe it’s because she tends to fluctuate between fabulous and flat. But when she is fabulous, Hannah Ruth is a winner! All she has to do is get the styling right and bring out her bubbly, sweet self.

My Middle 5 Choices

My Middle 5 Girls - clockwise from upper left - Bianca Guidotti, MJ Lastimosa, Julian Ellore Punzalan, Aurine Flores and Joy Diaz

My Middle 5 Girls – clockwise from upper left – Bianca Guidotti, MJ Lastimosa, Julian Ellore Punzalan, Aurine Flores and Joy Diaz

I believe that these five girls are the biggest threat to my Top 5 favorites. All of them are just as polished and crown-worthy so there is no relaxing for a moment. Competition is just too stiff!

6) Bianca Guidotti

There is a huge possibility that Bianca will grab the Universe title on the argument that she partly grew up in Brazil and speaks their language. Brazil will be host country for the Miss Universe this year and if we send a girl who can connect with the people there, we’ll certainly make waves. Another plus – if you watch her web interview, she’s smart, very natural and relaxed with no pretense whatsoever. I also find her body to be perfect for Miss U purposes – very tight and firm but still feminine. Keep an eye on this girl.

7) Ellore Punzalan

Just like Bea Santiago, Miss International 2013, Ellore has this amazing presence when she’s on stage. Her Filipina beauty is very alluring, her anaconda-like body moves with fluid grace and she is a sharp communicator in both English and Tagalog. The titles she might snatch from under the noses of the front-runners would be Universe, International or maybe Intercontinental.

8) MJ Lastimosa

From what I know, MJ only qualifies for the Universe title because of issues with age. Does she have a chance at that title? I think so but it’s an uphill climb with rivals like Parul, Kris Janson, Yvethe and Bianca Guidotti who will certainly make it difficult for her to ascend to the crown.

Now if there were no age problems, I do see her as a possible successor to Mutya Datul for the Bb. Supranational title. Intercontinental too would suit her. It’s MJ’s third attempt at a Bb. crown so wish her the best!

9) Julian Aurine Flores

I am in love with the pretty face and bubbly personality of Julian Aurine! She was incredibly funny in the web interview too and had that Miss U vibe about her. But can she win that or any other crown? It will be tough but if she manages to impress the judges then I think she’d be good for Supra or Intercontinental.

10) Joy Diaz

One of the smartest girls in the group, Joy Diaz gave a brilliant performance in the web interview. The US-bred Filipina was asked to sell a ‘moustache pen’ and I was ready to order a few hundred pieces one the strength of her crazy spiel. She gave the kind of answer you hope to get from a Miss Universe contestant!

My Last 5 Choices:

My Last 5 Girls - clockwise from top right - Nicole Marie Manalo, Kimverlyn Suiza, Carla Lizardo, Joy Gangan and Laura Lehmann

My Last 5 Girls – clockwise from top right – Nicole Marie Manalo, Kimverlyn Suiza, Carla Lizardo, Joy Gangan and Laura Lehmann

11) Kimverlyn Suiza

Kim’s main appeal is her elegant beauty which makes me think of classic ivory cameos. Her kind of beauty might not be the trend in pageants but the Nagcarlan native is lovely to behold and is well-spoken. I certainly wouldn’t mind it if she won a crown.

12) Nichole Marie Manalo

Do not overlook this beauty. She’s got an arsenal of weapons hiding somewhere up her sleeve or in the heel of her shoe. The blood of beauty queens runs in her veins – her sisters are Pamela Bianca and Katherine Manalo both Bb. Pilipinas titleholders. So watch out for this one…

13) Carla Lizardo
I am really happy to see Carla doing so well in Bb. Pilipinas. The TV anchor is giving it her best shot and I think she’ll score big points with judges in the Q&A not just for her smarts but for her lovely face which is even more attractive up close and sans make-up.

14) Laura Lehmann

Laura Lehman’s strongest asset apart from her pert look and firm bod are her accomplishments at such a young age. One of them is the pursuit of a triple degree in Psychology, Neuroscience and Spanish Studies.

15) Joy Gangan

Joy is my sentimental favorite. I love her story of growing up as a farmer girl in Isabela.
She is a doll from head to toe and would be a great successor to Mutya Datul for the Supranational crown however, Joy lacks the vivaciousness that made Mutya an international winner. But no matter, with more time and training I’m sure Joy’s bubbly self will come out!
